Cedar wood 3D hummingbird carved and painted by artist Harvey John
Harvey John was born into the Nuu-Chah-nulth Nation in Nootka, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia in 1953. The John family can be traced back to Jimmy John (1876-1978), Nuu-Chah-Nulth/Yuquit, a direct descendant of Chief Maquinna of the Nootka People who first greeted Captain Cook, the first Englishman to visit Vancouver Island.
Harvey John began to carve at age 12 under the guidance of his uncle, Simon John, and has made it his life's mission to preserve his family traditions and culture through the creation of fine hand-carved art. Harvey creates works in cedar, silver and argillite.
