Karin Bubaš - Winter Scene at Alexander Falls 28" x 28"

Known for her photographs, collages and drawings, Karin Bubaš explores the construction of gender in both fashion and art. Her practice is a conceptual interrogation of media that sets up an intersection between photography, film, advertising and high art. In this hybrid space, she often stages women and asks questions about their role in the history of representation.

Winter Scene at Alexander Falls is a limited edition print specially produced in conjunction with Karin Bubaš’s upcoming show at the Audain Art Museum from September 23, 2023 to January 28, 2024. With only 25 available for purchase, this is a unique opportunity to purchase a 28” x 28” (image 24”x 24”) archival pigment print by the Artist, who typically works in larger formats.

Karin Bubaš’s Winter Scene at Alexander Falls explores the interpretation of landscape as sublime, yet frightening. The viewer, as well as the subject in the photo, is left vulnerable to nature’s power, represented here within the rapid movement of the waterfall and the unique zig-zagging pattern of the ice, water and rocks.

The image largely plays on the contrast between light and dark. This contrast is compounded by the softness of the snow against the jagged hardness of the ice and rock. Nodding to the atmospheric vistas painted by J. M. W. Turner, such as The Falls of the Riechenbach, Winter Scene at Alexander Falls is also reminiscent of the photography of Ansel Adams, in which he references tourist attractions within a landscape.
