Dave Dobie

Dave Dobie is a potter based in Abbotsford, British Columbia. He has been practicing since 1975. Dobie is known for pieces that are thrown on the wheel and then altered, distorted, carved or stamped. Currently he works within a few simple forms, but explores all the variations within those constraints; shape, texture, surface treatment, firing and glaze techniques in gas, salt and wood. He says the possibilities are endless.

When creating a series of mugs and bowls Dobie starts with small, medium and large sizes, each piece becomes unique with different shapes, stamping or brushwork. Slips are added and removed from the surface, and pieces are glazed in different colors, then fired in one of the three different kilns producing a variety of results.

Dobie fires his pieces on an old friend’s rural farm property. He uses 3 kinds of kilns; gas, salt/soda, and occasionally wood. With gas firing, there is an interaction between the clay, glaze and atmosphere in the kiln. Iron in the stoneware clays interact with the glaze, causing a speckling effect. These atmospheric kilns result in varied fired results and glaze effects.
