3/8" x 6 1/4"
Richard (Richie) Baker is a member of the Squamish Nation in North Vancouver, BC, and is known internationally for his artwork in the Northwest Coast style. Richie was born in 1962 and began carving at the age of 12, first by observing his father and other carvers at work, and then learning the basics of formline and technique. Richie comes from a long line of artists going back to his maternal grandmother, Katherine Scow, who was a Kwakwaka’wakw artist.
Richie was a featured carver at the 1986 World Exposition, and this opportunity opened many doors for him. In 1996, he opened a studio for the public on the Capilano Reserve in North Vancouver, and began doing custom orders for weddings, anniversaries, and other personal and business gifts. He has been commissioned by a number of private companies as well as First Nations organizations throughout Canada for both his hand-engraved jewelry and cedar wood-carvings.
