Five Windows
In 2023, Ikeda spent three months in Whistler as an artist-in-residence at the Audain Art Museum during his retrospective, Flowers from the Wreckage. During this residency, he created Five Windows, a drawing inspired by the Museum’s natural surroundings as seen through the windows of the Museum’s upper galleries, where his drawing table was set. The work captures flowing water with salmon swimming upstream in front of a portrait of the artist, who is seated at a desk that transforms into the surface of the water. Behind the artist, the surrounding landscape depicts animals and birds moving among the trees, reflecting Ikeda’s deep engagement with his immediate environment and his perspective on nature. The white colour of the paper is strategically incorporated to outline the shapes of animals, tree branches, and silhouettes, effectively employing both positive and negative space.

Manabu Ikeda
Born in Saga, Japan, Ikeda specializes in highly technical pen-and-ink drawings created with a nib pen. His imagery draws from a wide range of influences, including outdoor activities, popular culture, human civilization, and the natural world. Through his distinctive worldview and intricate depictions of entangled chaos, Ikeda reveals deeper meanings within everyday life. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has received critical acclaim for its exceptional craftsmanship.

His work explores the complex relationship between humanity and nature, blending natural and artificial imagery with contemporary themes and concerns. Ikeda’s compositions often merge real and imagined worlds, addressing subjects such as natural disasters, urban landscapes, and human intervention in the environment. One of his most celebrated works, Rebirth, took more than three years to complete and reflects on the aftermath of Japan’s Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, portraying both devastation and the resilience of life.
