Robert Davidson
Robert Davidson, whose Haida name is Guud San Glans (Eagle of the Dawn), was born in 1946 in Hydaburg, Alaska. He moved with his family to Massett on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) in 1947 and lived there until 1965 when he moved to Vancouver to complete his education. In 1966 he met Bill Reid and soon after, began an 18-month apprenticeship that launched his career as an artist. He is a master carver of totem poles and masks and works in a variety of other media as a printmaker, painter and jeweller. He is also a leading figure in the renaissance of Haida art and culture. An impeccable craftsman, his creative and personal interpretation of traditional Haida form is unparalleled. He has received the Order of British Columbia and in 1996, was awarded the prestigious Order of Canada.

About Artists for Kids
In the late 1980s a group of secondary school teachers, wanting to provide a significant art experience for their students, began selecting promising pupils to attend artist-led master classes. When schools began facing severe funding cutbacks and art education was treated as disposable, the founders of Artists for Kids (AFK) were determined to find a way for students to continue receiving the high-calibre art education that had proven to be effective and inspiring. Needing a financial model that would be sustainable and support the educational objectives of AFK, a print program was developed.
AFK’s acquisition committee purchases a major work by a selected artist. That work then goes into a teaching collection at The Gordon Smith Gallery of Art and the artist in turn donates their time and talent to create an original print, photograph or sculpture. The entire limited run of the art becomes exclusive to AFK to sell with proceeds funding educational programs, art camps for teachers and students, and future acquisitions.
