Takao Tanabe and Bill Reid met in the late 1950s and became close friends. Both shared a deep interest in art, working across traditional forms and modern media, and they frequently visited one another. During one of these visits, Reid presented Tanabe with a sculptural wire portrait he had created of him. It was not made for any particular occasion, but simply as a playful and generous expression of their friendship and sense of humor.
