Sterling Silver and Freshwater Pearl earrings by Mikel Grant.
Elegant white freshwater pearls hang from richly textured sterling silver discs reminiscent of a cratered moon.
Pearls have long been associated with the moon, the glowing white orbs eliciting a natural comparison. These connections are strengthened by the moon's influence on our waters, where pearls are born. In ancient Indian texts, pearls are considered the daughter of the moon and in Western cultures, the pearl has been associated with the planet Venus, whose namesake, the goddess of love, came from the sea. Pearl is the birthstone for June.

Before becoming a jewellery-maker, Mikel took a detour through university and finished a biology degree. Inspired by her studies, she later used a collection of insects as inspiration for her first line of jewelry. Mikel’s current line of jewellery reflects her personal standards for integrity in craft, technique and finish, paying attention to artistry as well as functionality. In 2014, Mikel and her partner Kelly James used their 25th anniversary as inspiration to relocate from Vancouver to Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast, and created a unique studio in their home surrounded by forests and wildlife.
